Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Charleston). They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 37-35 win over the Mattoon Greenwave on Friday. For the Trojans, this counts as revenge for the 20-17 victory the Greenwave walked away with the last time they faced one another back in October of 2024.

Despite the defeat, Mattoon saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Brayden Hackett threw for 298 yards and a pair of TDs, and also rushed for 54 yards and two scores.
Charleston's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Mattoon, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Charleston will venture away from home to take on Mt. Zion at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Trojans will need to watch out since the Braves have now posted at least 31 points in their last three contests. As for Mattoon, they will head out to square off against Taylorville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
