Zapata is 0-4 against Calallen since November of 2021 but things could change on Friday. The Hawks will host the Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. Zapata will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each contest than the last.
The home team had come away the winner the last five times Zapata and Hidalgo Early College had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Hawks blew past the Pirates, posting a 48-21 victory. The Hawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 24 points or more this season.
Jay Solis was his usual excellent self, rushing for 160 yards and two scores on only five carries, while also picking up 122 receiving yards and one TD. His longest rush was for an impressive 64 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Ryan Solis was another key player, throwing for 124 yards and three touchdowns while completing 85.7% of his passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Zapata was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 305 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 239 rushing yards in six consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Calallen posted their closest win since August 30, 2024 on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Tuloso-Midway 30-27. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Wildcats.
Calallen's win came from a few key players Zapata will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Connor Klostermann, who threw for 180 yards and one TD, and also rushed for 37 yards and one score. Another player making a difference was Drayson Gamez, who gained 126 total yards.
Calallen's win bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Zapata, their victory bumped their record up to 6-1.
Zapata took a serious blow against Calallen in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, falling 42-0. Thankfully for the Hawks, Sebastian Dennis (who rushed for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only ten carries) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
