South Putnam hasn't had much luck against West Vigo recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Eagles will welcome the Vikings at 5:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (South Putnam 3, West Vigo 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
South Putnam will bounce into Wednesday's game after beating Northview, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Eagles never let the Knights get on the board and left with a 3-0 win on Tuesday. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 7, 2019, but that streak is no more.
Not much got past Emelia Wells, who gave up just five hits and racked up seven Ks to keep Northview off the board.
At the plate, South Putnam's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Taylor Boyce, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
South Putnam hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Northview struck out seven times.
Meanwhile, West Vigo had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. They were the clear victors by a 16-6 margin over the Trojans. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won 13 matches by seven runs or more so far this season.
Cameron Funk spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Jaleigh Lindley was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Krause, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
South Putnam pushed their record up to 13-4 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for West Vigo, their win bumped their record up to 18-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. South Putnam hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.8 home runs per game. However, it's not like West Vigo struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.9 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
