Marshall has gone 6-1 against Nacogdoches recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Mavericks will welcome the Dragons at 7:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, Marshall put up the most points they have all season on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Jacksonville 56-0. The Mavericks haven't had any issues with the Fightin' Indians recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Marshall got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Doug Johnson out in front who rushed for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only seven carries. Denijh Montgomery was another key back, rushing for 117 yards and two scores on only 13 carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Marshall was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 361 rushing yards. They are a perfect 4-0 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
Marshall's defense stepped up as well, laying out Trent Clater three times. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Breon Williams, Na'Tavin Johnson, and Jagger Robbins, who each picked up one sack apiece. Jamarion Sparks got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Nacogdoches hadn't done well against Whitehouse recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Dragons came out on top against the Wildcats by a score of 34-24. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Nacogdoches' win came from a few key players Marshall will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Trae Page, who rushed for 153 yards and one TD. Those 153 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Rj Whitaker, who gained 148 total yards and two touchdowns.
Nacogdoches didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Josiah Lane, Caden Thomas, Landon Sherrard, and Micah Lockett picked up one apiece. Sherrard has been hot for a while, having also posted five or more total tackles the last 15 times he's played. Another thorn in Whitehouse's side was Idarius Whitaker, who picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made 12 total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Nacogdoches' victory bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Marshall, their win bumped their record up to 5-2.
The upcoming contest will be a clash of competing strengths. Marshall has deployed a run-first offense that has averaged 236 rushing yards a game. Meanwhile, Nacogdoches has preferred to attack from the air: they average 313.3 passing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Friday? There's only one way to find out.
Everything came up roses for Marshall against Nacogdoches in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 42-0 victory. Do the Mavericks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Dragons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
