After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Ash Fork, the Red Mesa Redskins were happy to have found some success on Saturday. They put the hurt on Grand Canyon with a sharp 53-32 victory. With Red Mesa ahead 28-8 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Leading Red Mesa to victory were Jonah Herbert and Jerwin Begay. Herbert scored 14 points along with 6 rebounds, while Begay scored 18 points. That makes it two consecutive games in which Herbert has scored at least 25% of Red Mesa's points. Nicamiah Vigil was another key contributor, scoring 6 points along with 4 steals.
Grand Canyon's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ryder Lyle, who scored 11 points along with 3 steals. Lyle scored a full 34.4% of Grand Canyon's points, the second time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
The victory got Red Mesa back to even at 1-1. As for Grand Canyon, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-3.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Red Mesa will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Valley at 7:30 p.m. on November 28th. As for Grand Canyon, they will face off against Shonto Prep at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Arizona (Shonto Prep is ranked 177th, while Grand Canyon is ranked 184th).
