Westfall is 9-1 against Huntington since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Mustangs will square off against the Huntsmen at 5:15 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
While Westfall's victory against Adena wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Mustangs had just enough and edged out the Warriors 5-4. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Westfall saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gabby Henry, who went 1-for-2 with two runs.
Westfall hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Adena struck out 11 times.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Huntington). They put the hurt on Chesapeake with a sharp 24-4 win on Thursday. Considering the Huntsmen have won seven games by more than eight runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Leah McCloskey made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, earning one RBI and two runs. That's the most runs she has posted since April 1st.
In other batting news, Huntington got a massive performance out of Savannah Bushatz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Bushatz is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Allie Baker was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Westfall's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-6. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Huntington, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-9 record this season.
Huntington's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Friday. Westfall has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Huntington, though, as they've been averaging only 3.4 strikeouts. Will Westfall keep running through batters, or will the Huntsmen buck the trend?
Westfall was able to grind out a solid victory over Huntington in their previous matchup on April 7th, winning 7-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
