The Desert Mountain Wolves will square off against the Sunrise Mountain Mustangs at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. Desert Mountain is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Desert Mountain is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Arizona College Prep, who was ranked 11th at the time (Desert Mountain was ranked eighth). The Wolves lost 10-4 to the Knights on Thursday. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Wolves, who until this matchup were averaging three runs allowed.
Peyton Butler made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Adrieana Godinez, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs.
Meanwhile, Sunrise Mountain waltzed into their game on Thursday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They never let the Eagles get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. Considering the Mustangs have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Allie Souther looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, she posted five strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March of 2025.
At the plate, Kaelani Paulino was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run and five RBI. Another player making a difference was Mckenna Morgan, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
Sunrise Mountain was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .323 or higher in six consecutive matchups.
This is the second loss in a row for Desert Mountain and nudges their season record down to 18-4-1. As for Sunrise Mountain, their win bumped their record up to 16-6.
Desert Mountain's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's game. The Wolves have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Sunrise Mountain, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Desert Mountain continue to outrun the ball?
Desert Mountain got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in March of 2025 against Sunrise Mountain by a conclusive 11-1 score. Will the Wolves repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
