The Kermit Yellow Jackets struggled with offensive rebounds on Thursday (the Lovington Wildcats had 14 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Kermit might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 55-46 to Lovington, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. While losing is never fun, Kermit can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 875th in Texas, while Lovington is ranked 15th in New Mexico).
Leylani Quiroz and MICHAELA CAZARIN certainly did their best on Thursday to try and avoid the loss. Quiroz scored 20 points along with three steals, while CAZARIN scored ten points along with five rebounds. Those 20 points set a new season-high mark for her.
Lovington's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Erlin Salcido, who scored nine points along with 11 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashelynn Borunda, who scored nine points along with ten rebounds and three steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Kermit and nudges their season record down to 4-3. As for Lovington, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-0.
Kermit will be playing at home against Liberty on Friday. Liberty is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Lovington, they will face off against Spearman at 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
