WATERBURY, Conn. - the Chargers had a big 24-point first quarter on Saturday, sealing a 44-12 victory over Wilby (Waterbury, Conn.).
Ansonia scored on a touchdown run by
Arkeel Newsome, a kick return touchdown by
JaiQuan McKnight and a McKnight touchdown pass to
Andrew Matos in the quarter.
AHS was up 44-0 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run by Newsome in the first quarter.
Taifa Wright played well for the Wildcats. The junior wide receiver ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to four on the year.
The Chargers' standout player in the win was McKnight. The sophomore running back threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored eight touchdowns on the season.
Ansonia came into the game allowing 13.5 points per game. The 12 points that Wilby ended with were well below its average of 19.3 coming into the game.
A 51-22 Ansonia victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The loss comes after Wilby defeated Crosby 46-14 last week.
Wilby (4-5) goes up against Sacred Heart in a non-conference game matchup next week, while Ansonia (9-0) locks horns with Woodland Regional also in a playoff game.
