There's no place like home for the Point Loma Pointers, who bounced back after a tough loss on the road last Wednesday. They blew past Rock Academy 69-48. Given Point Loma's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 146th, while Rock Academy is ranked 654th), the result on Wednesday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Point Loma was led to victory by Nick Freeman and Grant Stewart . Freeman scored 18 points along with 9 rebounds and 4 steals, while Stewart scored 25 points along with 4 steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Stewart has scored at least 25% of Point Loma's points. Trevor Dorris was another key contributor, scoring 7 points along with 5 assists.
Rock Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was David Whitley, who scored 10 points along with 7 blocks and 6 rebounds. Whitley is absolutely dominating the block category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jaden Hicks, who scored 11 points along with 8 rebounds.
Point Loma's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Rock Academy, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Point Loma will face off against Mira Mesa at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Mira Mesa knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight matches -- so hopefully Point Loma likes a good challenge. As for Rock Academy, they will head out on the road to face off against O'Farrell Charter at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday.
