6A District 5 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Gainesville extended the longest winning streak in 6A District 5 this week by beating Vanguard, 34-19. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Lake Weir and Lecanto played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Lake Weir eventually emerging with a 37-34 victory. Cutler Blackburn threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
Ja'rael Hamilton was the best wideout in the league this week as the Hurricanes topped the Panthers. Hamilton tallied five receptions for 104 yards. Shawn Evans helped Lake Weir's passing attack out by catching four balls for 103 yards.
Christian Barber was the most productive running back in 6A District 5 this week. He ran for 80 yards on six carries as Lecanto defeated Lecanto. Nile Waters also contributed to the rushing game with 55 yards on the ground.
Thanks to the talents of Adam Robles and Tyronte Files the Knights have been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Robles leads the league in passing with 844 yards, while Files has rushed for 634 yards this season. Jason Robinson's team's Evans leads the league in receiving yards with 418 on 30 catches.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Vanguard takes on McKinley Rolle's team. Alex Casteneda's team is currently in fourth, while the Panthers are in second.
The Hurricanes made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 6,349 from 6,807. The improvement came about via a 37-34 victory over Lecanto last week.
