The Newport Wildcats entered their tilt with the Holy Cross Indians with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Newport sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 44-42 victory over Holy Cross on Friday. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Kyle Lee went supernova for Newport, throwing for 375 yards and five touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes, and also punching in a rushing score. Rod Thompson did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 113 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Newport's defensive line stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Holy Cross' QB won't forget Keegan Farrell anytime soon given Farrell sacked him four times.
Holy Cross' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performance. Perhaps the best among them was Donovan Ambrocio, who threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Devonte Ryan, who picked up 120 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Newport's win was their third straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 7-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.0 points per game. As for Holy Cross, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season.
Newport will be playing in front of their home fans against Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Holy Cross, they will head out on the road to face off against Newport at 1:00 p.m. Newport knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three games -- so hopefully Holy Cross likes a good challenge.
