The South View Tigers will head out on the road to square off against the Southern Lee Cavaliers at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. South View will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
South View is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Douglas Byrd a 21-0 shutout on Friday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Tigers with their most commanding win of the season.
Jaquel Campbell was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Campbell was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Isaiah Alford, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was David Ramsey, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1.
South View always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .828. The last time their OBP was this high was since the start of last season.
Southern Lee hadn't beaten Richmond on the road since May 2, 2022 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. Southern Lee sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 1-0 win over Richmond.
Not much got past Bryan McCollum, who gave up just four hits and racked up nine Ks to keep Richmond off the board. Those nine strikeouts set a new season-high mark for McCollum.
On the hitting side, Southern Lee's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Christian Cox, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
South View's win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Southern Lee, their record now sits at 3-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. South View has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Southern Lee struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
