After flying high against the Rice Consolidated Raiders last Friday, the Columbus Cardinals came back down to earth. Columbus fell just short of Yoakum by a score of 43-40. Columbus was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Yoakum apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
Columbus' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Anaya Gardner, who scored 16 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Thea Schobel, who scored 13 points.
Jayana Phillips was her usual excellent self, scoring 14 points along with eight rebounds and two steals for Yoakum. Phillips has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Destiny Rios, who scored six points along with four steals.
Columbus' defeat dropped their record down to 19-8. As for Yoakum, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 14-12.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Columbus will face off against Industrial at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Industrial will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 1008th, while Columbus is ranked 432nd). As for Yoakum, they will head out on the road to take on Hallettsville at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Hallettsville will be looking to extend their current 11-game winning streak.
