Heritage is a perfect 10-0 against Lenoir City since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Mountaineers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 5:30 p.m. Heritage is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.
On Monday, Heritage needed a bit of extra time to put away Sequoyah. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Chiefs. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mountaineers have posted since April 8th.
Katelyn Russell made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over 4.2 innings pitched. Russell was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Carly Smith was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
Meanwhile, Lenoir City won against South-Doyle on Monday with six runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. The Panthers never let Sequoyah get on the board and left with a 6-0 win. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matches by six runs or more this season.
Like Heritage, Lenoir City also got a great game from a two-way player: Kymbal Williams. She didn't allow a single earned run over seven innings pitched. Williams has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI and one run.
Williams wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sophie Reed, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double. Kylee Hanson was another, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Heritage pushed their record up to 23-8 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for Lenoir City, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 15-10.
Lenoir City's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Heritage has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Lenoir City, though, as they've been averaging only 3 strikeouts. Will Heritage keep running through batters, or will the Panthers buck the trend?
Heritage beat Lenoir City 12-7 in their previous meeting back in April. Will the Mountaineers repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
