Wingate is 0-8 against Thoreau since October of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Wingate Bears will be playing at home against the Thoreau Hawks at 7:00 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Wingate is ranked 87th, while Thoreau is ranked 70th).
Last Friday, Wingate suffered a tough 30-6 loss at the hands of Cuba. Wingate has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, Thoreau had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.7 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They blew past Crownpoint 50-0 on the road. The result was nothing new for Thoreau, who have now won four games by 37 points or more so far this season.
Thoreau got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Tys Nelson out in front who rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. Isaac Bear Eagle was another key contributor, throwing for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Another reason for the win was Thoreau's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Leading the way was Isaac Woody and his two sacks.
Wingate's defeat dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Thoreau, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 6-3.
Wingate was taken down by Thoreau 36-0 in their previous matchup back in October of 2022. Will Wingate have more luck at home instead of on the road?
