Middletown and Monroe-Woodbury are an even 5-5 against one another since June of 2021, but likely not for long. The Middie Bears will challenge the Crusaders at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Middletown took a six-run loss the last time they faced off against Pine Bush, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Middie Bears narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Bushmen 3-1. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Middie Bears as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Bethannie French spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits.
On the hitting side, Middletown saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alissandra Soto, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Monroe-Woodbury and Kingston meet (two straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Monday. The Crusaders were the clear victors by a 7-1 margin over the Tigers. The win was some much needed relief for the Crusaders as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.
Isabella Brelesky made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over seven innings pitched. Brelesky was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Callie Exarchakis, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Nadia Jemison also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen bases of the season.
Middletown now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Monroe-Woodbury, they now also have a winning record of 6-5.
Middletown's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's game. The Middie Bears have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Monroe-Woodbury, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Middletown continue to outrun the ball?
Middletown beat Monroe-Woodbury 8-5 in their previous matchup back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Middie Bears since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
