Big VIII recap Oct. 23, 2012
Centennial extended the longest winning streak in Big VIII this week by beating King, 49-17. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Huskies.
Corona made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 4,206 from 4,368. The improvement was the result of 49-13 victory over the Panthers last week.
Michael Darr put up the best numbers through the air as Santiago defeated Corona. He finished with 10 completions for 193 yards and three touchdowns. Darr's favorite target this week was Jordan Huffman, who caught three passes for 62 yards.
Barry Ware was the best wideout in the league this week as Centennial bested the Wolves. Ware tallied six receptions for 79 yards. Chase Krivashei helped Centennial's passing attack out by catching six balls for 48 yards.
Coltin Gerhart provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Norco beat Roosevelt. He completed 12 passes for 204 yards and also ran for 151 yards. Gerhart's favorite target this week was Matthew Williams, who caught four passes for 69 yards.
The Sharks' Darr and Dorion Barnett have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Darr has thrown for 1652 yards this season, while Barnett, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 39 catches for 532 yards. The Cougars' Joseph Ajeigbe leads the league in rushing yards with 1087.
Norco's Gerhart is a mere 82 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Gerhart has rushed for 918 yards on 110 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in Big VIII this week will be when Matt Logan's team takes on the Mustangs. The Huskies are in first place, while Roosevelt is in fifth place.
Santiago led the league in scoring this week after putting up 49 points on the Panthers. Darr ran for 66 yards in the win.
