The Greencastle Tiger Cubs will head out to take on the South Putnam Eagles at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Greencastle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Greencastle made up a huge gap compared to their last game against West Vigo, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Tiger Cubs fell just short of the Vikings by a score of 10-8 on Wednesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Tiger Cubs have suffered since April 30, 2024.
Greencastle got a good showing from Griffin Goodpater, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
On the hitting side, Bryton Gregg and Treyten Clark did some serious damage despite the final result: Gregg went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI, while Clark went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run. That run was Clark's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Gooch, who went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, South Putnam was able to grind out a solid victory over Cloverdale on Thursday, taking the game 4-1.
Wyatt Mullin made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 15 over seven innings pitched. Those 15 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Eli Owens, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.
Greencastle's defeat dropped their record down to 4-2. As for South Putnam, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
South Putnam's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Greencastle hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .329. It's a different story for South Putnam, though, as they've only averaged .241. Will they be able to contain Greencastle's hitters?
Greencastle skirted past South Putnam 4-2 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tiger Cubs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
