Wilmington is 0-6 against Joliet Catholic since April of 2017 but things could change on Wednesday. The Wildcats will welcome the Hilltoppers at 4:30 p.m. Wilmington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.6 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Wilmington got the win against Streator by a conclusive 10-3. The victory continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won four in a row.
Taryn Gilbert made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Keeley Walsh and Taylor Stefancic did most of the damage at the plate: Walsh went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Stefancic went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. That triple marked the first that Walsh has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Molly Southall, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Wilmington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .364 or higher in four consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, after soaring to ten runs the game before, Joliet Catholic was a bit more limited in their contest on Tuesday. They fell just short of Providence Catholic by a score of 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Hilltoppers have suffered since May 18, 2024.
Like Wilmington, Joliet Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Nina Sebahar. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Sebahar was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Sebahar wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Molly Ryan, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run.
Wilmington pushed their record up to 21-6 with the win, which was their 12th straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Joliet Catholic, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 16-11 record this season.
Wilmington couldn't quite get it done against Joliet Catholic when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 6-2. Will the Wildcats have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
