Garfield and Holy Names Academy are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Bulldogs will host Holy Names Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Garfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Garfield made easy work of Lincoln and carried off a 12-4 victory. The win continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their matchups with the Lynx: they've now won five in a row.
Joie Cunningham was incredible, going 4-for-5 with two triples, three runs, and one stolen base. Those two triples gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kaitlyn Washington, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs.
Garfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .457. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lincoln only posted a batting average of .269.
Seattle Prep hit Holy Names Academy with a 11-run seventh inning last Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. Holy Names Academy lost 17-3 to Seattle Prep. Holy Names Academy hasn't had much luck with Seattle Prep recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
Lee Smedstad made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last six games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Maria Coussens, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Garfield pushed their record up to 13-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.2 runs over those games. As for Holy Names Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-9.
Monday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Garfield has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .531. However, it's not like Holy Names Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .472. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Garfield took their victory against Holy Names Academy in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 12-2 score. Will the Bulldogs repeat their success, or do Holy Names Academy have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
