Basketball Game Preview: Humboldt Cubs vs. Eureka Tornadoes

Humboldt and Eureka are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2019, but not for long. The Humboldt Cubs will look to defend their home court on Monday against the Eureka Tornadoes at 7:00 p.m. Humboldt knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four matchups -- so hopefully Eureka likes a good challenge.

Last Friday, Humboldt was fully in charge, breezing past Erie 56-29. Fans of the Cubs have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

Humboldt's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mason Sterling, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 13 points in addition to seven boards and four steals. Sterling is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Colden Cook, who posted 12 points and eight rebounds.

Humboldt smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Eureka's undefeated season came to an end after three games on Friday. They were outmatched by Olpe and fell 62-23. The loss was the Tornadoes' first of the season.

Humboldt's victory was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-0. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.9 points per game. As for Eureka, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.

Everything came up roses for Humboldt against Eureka when the teams last played back in January, as the squad secured a 56-22 win. Does Humboldt have another victory up their sleeve, or will Eureka turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
