Coleman extended their losing streak to five on Thursday, dropping them down to 4-6. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Wausaukee Rangers. The Cougars were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Rangers earlier this season, when they won 5-3.
Makenzie Nowak spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and six unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Coleman saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Macy Nowak, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Alyssa Kurth was another, going 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
As for Wausaukee, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games.
On Wausaukee's side, Keaghan Stumbris made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up six earned runs off nine hits. Stumbris was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That double was her first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Skyler Betts, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Coreen Schroeder, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Coleman will take on Niagara at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Wausaukee, they will square off against Crivitz at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Wolverines' pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so the Rangers' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
