Marcellus had lost seven straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 2-10 to make it eight. They fell 7-4 to the Mexico Tigers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-4 on Monday.
Elijah Eaton was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Eaton was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.
Eaton wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Dakota Wilson, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
As for Mexico, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-5. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 8 runs in those games.
Like Marcellus, Mexico also got a great game from a two-way player: Brayden Mack. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Mack also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Mexico is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-5 otherwise. Mack was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, Carter Robert was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Mexico's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 2-5 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Caleb Robert, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.
Marcellus and Mexico could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps New York Rankings. The Mustangs will square off against Skaneateles at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank disadvantage (512 vs. 242). Meanwhile, Mexico (ranked 292nd) will meet Phoenix (ranked 84th) at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
