Baseball Game Preview: Portsmouth Trojans vs. Ironton Fighting Tigers

The Portsmouth Trojans will challenge the Ironton Fighting Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Portsmouth 4.1, Ironton 2.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.

While Portsmouth's win against Green wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Trojans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Bobcats on Tuesday. The Trojans haven't had any issues with the Bobcats recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.

Portsmouth saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was J.T. Williams, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI. Williams has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last six times he's played.

Meanwhile, after a string of five wins, Ironton's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They fell just short of South Point by a score of 3-2. Having soared to a lofty 15 runs in the game before, the Fighting Tigers couldn't push the score so high this time.

Ian Ginger was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Tanner Kleinman, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Portsmouth pushed their record up to 12-4-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Ironton, their defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 10-1 and their overall record down to 12-2.

Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Portsmouth hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .343.
