The Concord Minutemen will head out to square off against the Mishawaka Cavemen at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Concord is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Concord came up short against Fairfield and fell 7-3.
Noah Norwood was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. Mark Herman was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Mishawaka had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Saturday. They were the clear victors by an 18-0 margin over the Wildcats. The game marked the Cavemen's most dominant win of the season so far.
Gunnar Eby tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched.
At the plate, Maddux Kuhnle was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Walker Hawn also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Mishawaka was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Bend Riley only posted a batting average of .125.
Mishawaka pushed their record up to 7-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Concord, their loss dropped their record down to 4-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Concord has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mishawaka struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Concord skirted past Mishawaka 11-9 in their previous matchup back in June of 2024. Do the Minutemen have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cavemen turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
