The 2020 high school football season was filled with disappointment for many due to COVID. From cancellations to delays, it was a minor victory to get on the field and play.
For some teams ranked among the Top 100 winningest football programs in the country, 2020 was especially difficult. According to the MaxPreps list of Top 100 winningest programs, compiled from a number of sources, 29 schools finished at .500 winning percentage or lower for the 2020 season. A total of 14 teams played five games or less and three schools didn't play any games at all.
The toughest season, however, probably belonged to Valdosta (Ga.), the program with more wins than any other in the nation. After finishing 7-5, Valdosta forfeited its seven victories due to the use of ineligible players. The investigation by the Georgia High School Association also led to Valdosta putting coach Rush Propst on administrative leave. He's since been replaced as head coach with Shelton Felton.
The winless season was the first for a program that has been ranked as the winningest football program in the nation since the 1987 season. Trailing Washington (Massillon, Ohio) 624-623 heading into the 1987 season, Valdosta tied Washington after the Tigers lost their first game of the season. Washington went on to six straight, but lost its last three, allowing Valdosta to vault into first.
Valdosta has been on top ever since, building a lead of as many as 51 games in 2004 before winning one game during the 2005 season. Washington has been in second place for most of that time, ceding the spot to Highlands (Fort Thomas, Ky.) following the 2011 season.
Now, however, Valdosta's lead has shrunk to its smallest margin since 1989. Male (Louisville, Ky.), which at one time in the early 1960s ranked as the winningest team in the nation, has gone 93-16 in the past eight seasons to move into second place with 914 wins.
Washington has also regained its winning ways. After dipping to No. 5 last year, the Tigers are back at No. 3 with 909 wins. Mayfield (Ky.), a program which has gone 132-13 the past decade, is two wins behind at 907 while Highlands has dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 with 906 wins.
Other notes
• Pine Bluff has overtaken Central (Little Rock) as the winningest program in Arkansas, 814-813, but the two longtime powerhouses could both end up behind Nashville after the 2021 season. Nashville more than doubled Pine Bluff and Central's win totals with nine victories to move up to 806 all-time wins.
• Hampton (Va.) has been dropped to No. 19 overall when MaxPreps decided to go with totals compiled by Rick Baker of Four Seasons Football rather than Football Friday Night. Baker's totals are nearly 27 wins less for Hampton than Football Friday Night, but Baker has a complete accounting of games for the Crabbers while FFN does not.
• MaxPreps has also dropped Lincoln County (Lincolnton, Ga.) from the list based on information from the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Totals provided by Lincoln County High School include games played as Lincolnton prior to 1970 when it consolidated with Westside (Lincolnton). Since Lincoln County is considered a new school different from Lincolnton, GHSFHA only includes totals for Lincoln County from 1970 on. The same is true for Clarke Central, which was a merger of Burney-Harris and Athens. Football Friday Night has Clarke Central in its Top 100 based on a combination of wins as Athens and Clarke Central.
• Louisville (Miss.) joins the list this year after research by the Alabama High School Football History website listed the school as the winningest program in Mississippi, ahead of Starkville and Meridian.
• Sources are listed for each win total. One change is that we now list the source of Illinois teams as Kev Varney and Tom Sikorski rather than the Illinois High School Association. Football Friday Night is a continuation of work done by Robert Fawcett of Texas in the early 2000s.
