Sun Valley has gone 8-2 against Piedmont recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Sun Valley Spartans will host the Piedmont Panthers at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Sun Valley has four straight wins, Piedmont has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
While Sun Valley didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 7-3 victory over Stuart W. Cramer on Friday.
Connor Salerno looked comfortable as he struck out nine batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brian Devereaux, who scored a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Kyle Kroehler was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Piedmont came up short against South Stanly on Friday, falling 10-4.
Piedmont saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Drake Covington, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two RBI and one double. Another was Trent Polk, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Piedmont's defeat dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Sun Valley, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-0.
Piedmont's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Sun Valley has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.5 hits per game. It's a different story for Piedmont, though, as they've been averaging 12.4 hits. Given Sun Valley's sizable advantage in that area, Piedmont will need to find a way to close that gap.
Sun Valley couldn't quite get it done against Piedmont when the teams last played back in April of 2023 as they fell 6-1. Will Sun Valley have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
