Sierra Grande's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Yazmin Molina, who posted eight points along with eight rebounds and three steals, and Jaylyn Quezada, who scored ten points and four steals. Quezada has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 12 times she's played.
Even though they lost, Sierra Grande smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in eight consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, La Veta was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 45-41 heartbreaker at the hands of Cheraw. While the Redhawks didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Wolverines 12-6 in the first quarter.
Sierra Grande will have to contain Aspen Autry as she made an impact in La Veta's last game. She had 13 points in addition to eight boards and seven assists. Those eight rebounds gave Autry a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jaiden Goemmer, who put up six points.
The defeat was their first at home , dropping their record down to 9-6. As for La Veta, their loss dropped their record down to 8-7.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Sierra Grande has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 28.8 boards per game. However, it's not like La Veta struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.9 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Sierra Grande came out on top in a nail-biter against La Veta when the teams last played back in February of 2024, sneaking past 46-43. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sierra Grande since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
