The Newnan Cougars will take on the Banneker Trojans at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Banneker took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Newnan, who comes in off a win.
If Newnan beats Banneker with 38 points on Friday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two contests with that exact score. The Cougars walked away with a 38-28 win over Lovejoy on Friday. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Wildcats recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Newnan's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brodie Campbell, who threw for 231 yards while completing 91.3% of his passes, and also punched in one rushing score. Shawn Grier was in the mix as well, providing the Cougars with two scores.
Newnan didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Tamarcus Mitchell and Jamarion Brewer. Newnan got some further help from Tj Gates: he made 14 total tackles.
Meanwhile, Banneker was not able to break out of their rough patch last Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They took a 19-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of McIntosh.
Newnan will have to keep a close watch on Remeraz Baker and Kelian Allen, a pair of players who had a big impact on Banneker's prior game. Baker rushed for 62 yards and one touchdown, while Allen rushed for 82 yards. Baker showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 53 yards.
Even if they lost, Banneker's defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. In that department, Quentin Hand was the leader with two. Danarris Flannigan was another major factor on D, picking up a sack, forcing one fumble, and making nine total tackles (3.0 for loss) in addition to snagging an interception.
Newnan's victory bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Banneker, their loss dropped their record down to 1-7.
Everything went Newnan's way against Banneker in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, as Newnan made off with a 44-20 win. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
