Wolfe County is a perfect 10-0 against Powell County since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Wolves are taking a road trip to take on the Pirates at 6:00 p.m. Wolfe County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
On Friday, Wolfe County came up short against Madison Southern and fell 8-5. That's two games in a row now that the Wolves have lost by exactly three runs.
Wolfe County saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kenzie Miller, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Abby Stone was another, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, Powell County made easy work of Buckhorn on Thursday and carried off a 15-8 victory. Considering the Pirates have won five matchups by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Kylie Shick was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Shick was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Marti Kirk, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Emma Rison, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Powell County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .585. They are 4-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Powell County has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Wolfe County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 10-6.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Wolfe County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .339. However, it's not like Powell County struggles in that department as they've averaged .358. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wolfe County took their victory against Powell County when the teams last played back in May of 2023 by a conclusive 9-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolves since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
