On Friday, The Santa Margarita Eagles faced the Mater Dei Monarchs in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Santa Margarita lost to Mater Dei on the road by a decisive 35-19 margin. While losing is never fun, Santa Margarita can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' national football rankings (they are ranked 76th, while Mater Dei is ranked fifth).
Despite the defeat, Santa Margarita saw an underclassman step up: Trent Mosley picked up 116 receiving yards and a touchdown. Mosley is on a roll when it comes to receiving yards, as he's now posted 100 or more in the last three games he's played.
Nathaniel Frazier was the offensive standout of the matchup as he rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.1 yards per carry. Jeilani Davis made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Another reason for the win was Mater Dei's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Santa Margarita's QB won't forget Nasir Wyatt anytime soon given Wyatt sacked him five times.
This is the second loss in a row for Santa Margarita and nudges their season record down to 5-5. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 30.5 points per game. As for Mater Dei, their win was their 11th straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 9-1.
After each having a week off, Santa Margarita and Sierra Canyon will shake off the cobwebs and square off against one another at 7:00 p.m. on November 10th. Sierra Canyon has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 376 points over their last eight contests. Mater Dei will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on JSerra Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on November 10th.
