It was a good run, but the Cairo Syrupmakers unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 52-46 hit to the loss column at the hands of Westover. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Cairo of the 68-53 defeat they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2023.
Cairo's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amari Powell, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. Powell has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Keshen Spence, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and six assists.
It was another big night for Traveion Wheeler, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds for Westover. Wheeler hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Anthony Milton, who scored 12 points.
Cairo's defeat dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Westover, the win got them back to even at 7-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cairo will take on Thomas County Central at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Westover won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Colquitt County at 6:00 p.m. on January 13th. Colquitt County is out to stop a four-game streak of losses at home.
