The Williamstown Yellowjackets will square off against the South Harrison Hawks at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Williamstown made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Magnolia, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Yellowjackets blew past the Blue Eagles 10-4 on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Yellowjackets, who have now won five contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Alyssa Clare spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Williamstown got a big performance out of Nevaeh Moore, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Kyla Myer was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.
Moore wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Williamstown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. The Yellowjackets are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, South Harrison earned a 15-12 victory over Calhoun on Saturday. With that win, the Hawks brought their scoring average up to 7.2 runs per game.
Tori Nicholson made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Nicholson was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Riley Myers was a standout: she scored two runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-5. Another player making a difference was Alexas Talbott, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Williamstown's victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 6-6. As for South Harrison, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-4.
Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Williamstown hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .323. However, it's not like South Harrison struggles in that department as they've averaged .336. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Williamstown came out on top in a nail-biter against South Harrison in their previous meeting two weeks ago, sneaking past 17-16. Do the Yellowjackets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Hawks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
