On Thursday, Elmwood Park beat Rolling Meadows 6-2.
Leilani Mendez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Isabel Hall was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-4. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Carole Akers was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, Leyden was able to grind out a solid win over Palatine on Thursday, taking the game 10-5. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Elise Bertsche made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Bertsche was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. That stolen base was her first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gianna Olan, who scored a run and stole three bases while going 3-for-4. She also hit two doubles, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Angelina Guillen, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Leyden now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Elmwood Park, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Leyden's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Elmwood Park has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .465. It's a different story for Leyden, though, as they've only averaged .335. Will they be able to contain Elmwood Park's hitters?
Elmwood Park came up short against Leyden in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, falling 7-3. Can the Tigers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
