Brooks Newman made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cooper Wilkins, who scored five runs and stole Two bases. while going 4-for-4. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits. Vani Hernandez was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing Three bases. while going 2-for-3.
South Granville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .610. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Durham School of the Arts had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 17-3 margin over the Vipers. Considering the Bulldogs have won three matchups by more than 13 runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Michael Matuszewski was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. Matuszewski was also big at the plate, scoring three runs.
In other batting news, Mars Hartmann was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Christopher Matuszewski, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
The victory made it two in a row for South Granville and bumps their season record up to 3-5. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 13 hits in those games compared to only 5.17 in the others. As for Durham School of the Arts, their record now sits at 4-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. South Granville has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Durham School of the Arts struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
South Granville took their win against Durham School of the Arts in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1. Will South Granville repeat their success, or does Durham School of the Arts have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
