Willis is 0-4 against Spring since November of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. Both teams will round out the year against one another at 10:00 a.m. at. Willis is hoping to put an end to a nine-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
After only 23 points in their last match, Willis made sure to put some points up on the board against Caney Creek on Monday. Willis came out on top against Caney Creek by a score of 55-46.
Willis' success was spearheaded by the efforts of Amy Roberts, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds, and Nija Calyen, who scored 21 points along with six rebounds. Calyen continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Sofia Dominguez, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, Spring entered their tilt with Fort Bend Travis with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Spring snuck past Fort Bend Travis with a 51-45 win on Monday. Given Spring's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 241st, while Fort Bend Travis is ranked 635th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Spring's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Za'Kenya Thompson, who scored 17 points. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Thompson has scored at least 25% of Spring's points. Jada Thomas was another key contributor, scoring 14 points.
Willis' victory bumped their record up to 3-15. As for Spring, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Willis have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 32.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Spring struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 21.5 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Willis took a serious blow against Spring in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, falling 59-22. Thankfully for Willis, Rikeyah Gant (who scored 20 points along with nine rebounds and three steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
