Burke County is 7-0 against Wayne County since January of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The two teams will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Burke County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 on Saturday.
Burke County proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 22) but on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged Jenkins County out 48-46. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win Burke County has posted yet this season.
Burke County got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Derrick Streetman out in front who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Bryce Wimberly was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Wayne County's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their fourth straight loss. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 55-54 to McIntosh County Academy. While losing is never fun, Wayne County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 421st, while McIntosh County Academy is ranked 200th).
The victory makes it two in a row for Burke County and bumps their season record up to 14-4. As for Wayne County, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost nine of their last ten games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-15 record this season.
Burke County didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Wayne County in their previous meeting on January 5th, but they still walked away with a 70-65 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Burke County since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
