New Bern's Jacquin Watkins rumbled for the longest rushing play in 4A Mideastern this season in his game against New Hanover last week. Watkins' team bested the Wildcats as he sprinted for 79 yards on the play and finished with 123 in all.
New Bern extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating New Hanover, 63-34. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
The Bears' dynamic duo of Josh Taylor and Chandler Powell proved tough for Kevin Motsinger's team to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Taylor threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns and Powell had 76 yards receiving. Bra'lon Cherry helped New Bern's passing attack out by catching three balls for 51 yards.
Quincy Rhodes was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 236 yards on 32 carries as Ashley topped the Wildcats. Teammate Chris Kane added to the ground attack by rushing for 115 yards.
The Bears' Taylor and Cherry have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Mideastern in both passing and receiving yards. Taylor has thrown for 1209 yards this season, while Cherry, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 17 catches for 342 yards. Rhodes from Ashley leads the league in rushing with 1066 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between New Bern and Hoggard. The Bears enters the contest ranked second in the state, while the Vikings ranks 15th.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when New Bern takes on Hoggard. The Bears have allowed 104 points this season, while Scott Braswell's team has given up 64. New Bern allowed 34 points last week as it bested New Hanover.
The Vikings and Laney played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with the Vikings eventually emerging with a 40-34 victory.
