The Wayne Pioneers pushed their score all the way to 57 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They opened the new year with a less-than-successful 66-57 defeat to Winfield. That's two games in a row now that Wayne has lost by exactly nine points.
Wayne lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Zane Adkins, who scored 19 points. Adkins continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Cooper Adkins was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with six rebounds and three blocks.
Wayne's loss was their 14th straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 2-7. As for Winfield, their win bumped their record up to 2-4.
Wayne will be playing in front of their home fans against Chapmanville Regional at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Chapmanville Regional presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Wayne in West Virginia (Chapmanville Regional is ranked 33rd, while Wayne is ranked 89th). As for Winfield, they will head out on the road to face off against Spring Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
