The Teurlings Catholic Rebels will venture away from home to face off against the St. Edmund Fighting Blue Jays at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Teurlings Catholic is coming into the game hot, having won their last 13 games.
Teurlings Catholic barely beat Sulphur the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Rebels were the clear victors by a 13-3 margin over the Golden Tors on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Rebels, who have now won 12 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Brennen Storms and Jack Purser did most of the damage at the plate: Storms went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run, while Purser went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits Storms has posted since back in February. Kaden Chavis was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4.
Teurlings Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .452. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Edmund). Their pitchers stepped up to hand St. Martinville a 20-0 shutout on Friday. The victory continues a trend for the Fighting Blue Jays in their matchups with the Tigers: they've now won three in a row.
Ian Rider made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, St. Edmund let Marcus Gradney Jr and Lannie Reed run wild. Gradney Jr scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Reed scored three runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-4. St. Edmund is undefeated when Gradney Jr posts two or more runs, but 10-14 otherwise. David Evans also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Teurlings Catholic pushed their record up to 26-3 with the win, which was their 20th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for St. Edmund, their record is now 16-14.
St. Edmund's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Teurlings Catholic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .352. It's a different story for St. Edmund, though, as they've only averaged .231. Will they be able to contain Teurlings Catholic's hitters?
