Mitchell is 10-0 against Gulf since December of 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Wednesday. The Mitchell Mustangs will head out on the road to face off against the Gulf Buccaneers at 7:30 p.m. One thing working in Mitchell's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last four games.
Even though Mitchell has not done well against Countryside recently (they were 0-5 in their previous five matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Mitchell came out on top against Countryside by a score of 58-51. That's two games straight that Mitchell has won by exactly seven points.
Ben Unger continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 21 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Unger has scored at least 25% of Mitchell's points. Another player making a difference was Connor Peterson, who scored 16 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Gulf, who are still winless after their fifth matchup. They fell just short of Lecanto by a score of 64-61. While losing is never fun, Gulf can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 694th, while Lecanto is ranked 95th).
Despite the defeat, Gulf got a solid performance out of Jeremiah Long, who scored 18 points along with three steals. The match was Long's fifth in a row with at least ten points. William Ruffin was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with nine assists and five rebounds.
Mitchell's win was their third straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-5. As for Gulf, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-5.
Everything came up roses for Mitchell against Gulf in their previous meeting back in December of 2022 as the team secured a 75-32 win. With Mitchell ahead 50-22 at the half, the game was all but over already.
