Clear Creek barely beat Platte Canyon the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Golddiggers put the hurt on the Huskies with a sharp 12-2 victory on Monday. Considering the Golddiggers have won five matchups by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Zephyr Schuessler made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Clear Creek is 3-1 when Schuessler allows one or fewer hits, but 4-8 otherwise. Schuessler was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Clear Creek let Raymond Kurtz and Blake Weichel run wild. Kurtz went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Weichel went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Weichel is becoming a predictor of Clear Creek's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-9 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Anthony Zacharias, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
Clear Creek always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Clear Creek's win bumped their record up to 7-9. As for Platte Canyon, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-16.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Clear Creek will head out to challenge Bishop Machebeuf at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Buffaloes will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Golddiggers surely won't give up without a fight. As for Platte Canyon, they will face off against Estes Park at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
