The Lawrence County Cougars are taking a road trip to take on the Wesson Cobras at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
It was a proper cat-fight when Lawrence County challenged McComb on Thursday. Everything went Lawrence County's way against McComb as Lawrence County made off with an 18-1 victory. The win continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Tigers: they've now won five in a row.
Marleigh Grace Russell was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the first time she hasn't allowed a single hit since back in April of 2024. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Adaya Ball was incredible, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in February of 2024. Zabrina Madison also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Lawrence County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .480. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Wesson got the win against South Pike on Thursday by a conclusive 18-2. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cobras.
Like Lawrence County, Wesson also got a great game from a two-way player: Maddie Sanders. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Sanders has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was even better at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI.
In other batting news, Wesson got a massive performance out of Jaide Shoop, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. Ady Rose Dowd was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.
Lawrence County's record now sits at 9-6. As for Wesson, their record now sits at 9-2.
Lawrence County couldn't quite finish off Wesson in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 8-6. Can Lawrence County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
