Video: Xcellent 25 High School Football Rankings See if there was any movement as the 2018 season began last week.
The 2017 high school football season saw six teams go over 800 all-time wins, bringing the overall number of programs to reach that milestone to 20.
In 2018, look for that number to grow by at least three as Shelby (N.C.), Lawton (Okla.) and Clinton (Okla.) all sit within one or two wins of reaching the plateau.
Valdosta (Ga.) still holds the top spot in MaxPreps' most recent list of the Top 50 All-Time Winningest High School Football Programs. With 917 wins, Valdosta is over 30 wins ahead of a trio of Kentucky teams — Highlands (Fort Thomas), Male (Louisville) and Mayfield — who take up the next three spots on the list. Only 12 wins separate the three teams from claiming supremacy in the Bluegrass State.
Lawton and Clinton, meanwhile, are looking to be the first Oklahoma school to reach 800 wins. Lawton is one win away at 799 while Clinton is two away at 798. Lawton could get there first, since it opens its season Aug. 23 and Clinton begins Aug. 31. Shelby begins its quest for 800 on Aug. 24.
Joining the 800 Club last year were Ansonia (Conn.) at 808, Berwick (Pa.) at 807, Steubenville (Ohio) at 806, Summerville (S.C.) at 806 and Pine Bluff (Ark.) at 802.
Pine Bluff will be looking to overtake Central (Little Rock) as the winningest school in Arkansas history. Central is the all-time leader in the state at 803 wins, but went just 2-8 last year. Pine Bluff finished 11-2.
The Top 50 list is compiled using numerous sources, including the National Federation of High School record book, The Football Friday Night website, which has continued the research done by historian Robert Dowcett. Team websites were also used along with state association website record books. All sources are listed for each team.
Included for each team is the school's all-time record, the year the program started, a list of state champions, and a list of notable coaches. The team's dynasty ranking and dynasty record, compiled by CalPreps, is that team's record for the past 15 seasons and its ranking among all of the football programs in the country.
