The Pomona Panthers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their third straight loss. They received a tough blow as they fell 46-28 to Green Mountain. While losing is never fun, Pomona can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 161st, while Green Mountain is ranked 50th).
When it comes to explaining why Pomona lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kendra Ritzmann. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. That was a full 46.4% of Pomona's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaliyah Valenzuela, who scored four points.
Pomona struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Green Mountain racked up 13 assists.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Green Mountain to victory, but perhaps none more so than Taylor Ellington, who scored 12 points along with two blocks. Another player making a difference was Julia Schafer, who scored eight points along with seven steals.
Pomona's loss dropped their record down to 8-8. As for Green Mountain, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season.
Pomona will head out on the road to challenge Evergreen at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Evergreen focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Wednesday. As for Green Mountain, they will be playing at home against Alameda at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Alameda is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
