John Jay and Clarkstown South are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Patriots will venture away from home to square off against the Vikings at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as John Jay comes in on six and Clarkstown South on four.
On Thursday, John Jay needed a bit of extra time to put away Suffern. They skirted past the Mounties 7-6. Seven seems to be a good number for the Patriots as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Anthony Batkay looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Vinny Angioletti, who went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs. Alex Jendras also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
While Clarkstown South didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-13), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Nyack on Thursday as they made off with an 8-1 victory. Considering the Vikings have won three contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Nick Speckenbach was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over six innings pitched. Those 12 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Justin Amodeo was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Kenny Johnston, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI.
John Jay's win was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-0. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Clarkstown South, their record is now 6-2.
John Jay's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's matchup. The Patriots have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Clarkstown South, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will John Jay continue to outrun the ball?
John Jay came up short against Clarkstown South when the teams last played back in May of 2024, falling 9-5. Can the Patriots avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
