In an anticipated national showdown that matched up defending state champions, No. 5
Grayson (Loganville, Ga.)
outlasted No. 19
Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.)
24-23 in an overtime thriller that saw the Rams stop a pair of two-point conversion attempts to secure the victory.
Following a defensive penalty in the end zone,
Ashton Turner
galloped through a huge hole for an eight-yard touchdown in the first overtime period to give Grayson a seven-point advantage. Thompson responded with a 15-yard touchdown strike from four-star junior quarterback
Trent Seaborn
to highly-regarded sophomore receiver
Dedrick Kimbrough
on its first offensive play of the overtime session.
After defensive pass interference was called on their first two-point conversion attempt, the Rams defense held strong on the second two-point attempt as the intended pass fell to the ground in the back of the end zone.

The teams exchanged three touchdowns in the final minutes of the game to set up the overtime session.
After a perfectly-executed punt backed up Grayson at its own one-yard line, the Rams were able to pay off a 99-yard touchdown drive with a one-yard score by Turner out of the Wildcat formation with just under three minutes to go in the fourth quarter to tie it at 10.
Following a defensive pass interference penalty that set Thompson up just inside midfield, Seaborn connected with Kimbrough for a 49-yard touchdown strike to give Thompson a 17-10 advantage with 2:10 remaining in the contest.
With their backs against the wall, the Rams connected on a 27-yard touchdown strike from junior quarterback
Deuce Smith
to junior receiver
Saif Bin-Wahad
, knotting things up at 17 with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
Following turnovers by both teams on their opening drives of the second half, Seaborn connected with senior wide receiver
Trey Knight
on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 6:52 remaining in the third quarter to give the Warriors a 10-3 lead.
Thompson captured the Class 7A state title in Alabama last year after taking down Central (Phenix City) 21-7 in the championship game. The Warriors went 11-3 in 2024 and held their opponents to 12.4 points per outing.
Grayson captured the Class AAAAAA state championship in Georgia last season by knocking off Carrollton 38-24 in the title game. The Rams finished the season ranked No. 7 in the final MaxPreps Top 25 in 2024 with a record of 14-1.
Grayson (3-0) returns to the field next Friday against
Mallard Creek (Charlotte, N.C.)
while Thompson (1-1) looks to bounce back against
Tuscaloosa County (Northport, Ala.)
on the same night.
