MATTHEWS, N.C. - The defense contributed on the scoring end for
Butler (Matthews, N.C.) on Saturday, totaling 12 points as the Bulldogs upset
Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) 55-26.
The Bulldogs were up 35-13 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Josh Glisson in the second quarter.
Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 22 entering the fourth.
A 28-point second quarter helped Butler secure the big victory. BHS scored on a Glisson touchdown run, a
Riley Ferguson touchdown pass to
Channing Stribling, a kick return touchdown by Stribling and a touchdown pass by Ferguson to Stribling in the quarter.
Stribling was the top performer for the Matthews school. The senior halfback caught two touchdowns.
Dequan Barnes played well for the Patriots. The senior wide receiver caught three touchdowns. His performance brought his touchdown total to 19 on the year.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 38-26 win for the Bulldogs.
The defeat comes as a step back for Independence, which notched a 45-42 victory over Northwest Guilford in its previous outing.
