Top ranked in 11-AA football, Brandon Valley took on Minnesota's Worthington High School Friday night, staying unbeaten with a 42-21 victory. The Lynx went to 4-0 with the victory, while the Trojans fell to 2-2.
Brandon Valley took a 28-15 lead into halftime. Quarterback Austin Sumner connected with Brett Wickett on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds remaining in the half. It was one of two touchdown receptions by Wickett.
Another highlight of the win was Ethan Sawyer’s 44-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that hit the middle of the crossbar and bounced over. The successful try was the longest field goal kicked in Brandon Valley history.
Football: O’Gorman Christens New Field with Win
Sioux Falls O’Gorman played its first game at newly-renovated McEneaney Field Friday night with a 35-0 win over the Mitchell Kernels. The new facility on the catholic school’s campus includes FieldTurf and a video scoreboard.
The Knights won their third-straight game of the season with senior running back Phil Wright carrying the football for 111 yards and also catching a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tony Viger. Mitchell was held to just 33 rushing yards.
O’Gorman was without the services of running back/safety Will Powell. He was hospitalized this week with a staph infection in his hand, but was on the field in civilian clothes for the game Friday night. Powell was expected to be back in action for next week’s game against Rapid City Stevens.
Football: Roosevelt Star Hurt in Victory
Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s 35-10 win at Rapid City Stevens Friday night was tempered by a concussion suffered by quarterback and safety Jake Weiss. Coach Brent DeBoer told the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader newspaper over the weekend that Weiss will be out for this weekend’s game against Spearfish.
Weiss was hurt in the third quarter of the game while playing safety and was taken off the field on a stretcher. He spent a night in a Rapid City hospital and came home Saturday night with his parents.
Football: Avon Stays Undefeated in 9-AA
The top team in South Dakota Class 9-A football steamrolled their way to an easy victory over an area rival Friday night.
Avon’s Pirates shut out the Scotland Highlanders 59-0 on Scotland’s home field. It was a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal playoff game won by Scotland on their way to a second straight state championship last fall.
The Pirates’ one-sided victory came on 287 yards of total offense, while holding the Highlanders to only 79 yards, all of which came on the ground.
Gayville-Volin Hall of Fame Inducts Trio
Gayville-Volin High School has inducted three former athletes into its hall-of-fame. They were inducted before the school’s first game on its new football field last Friday night.
The group inducted includes Bruce Jennings, Michael Kool, and Carrie VenOsdel Mart. Jennings was a 1976 graduate of the southeastern South Dakota school, Kool graduated in 1997 and Mart was a 1993 graduate.
Jennings was a three-sport start who was twice MVP of his cross country team and was the state Class B individual champion in 1974. He also helped his track team win the 1975 state Class B team championship and still has five school track records.
Kool was also a three-sport star at Gayville-Volin, becoming the second Raider to go over the 1,000 point mark in basketball, still holds school records for the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, and led his football team to a state title in 1995 and a state runner-up spot in 1996.
VenOsdel-Mart was the first girls’ basketball player at G-V to reach the 1,000 point level.
